About Neftali A. Diaz

My name is Neftali Diaz  and I was born and raised under the hot diverse city of El Paso, TX. I ventured out of West Texas and headed east to Austin, TX in 2006 to attend the University of Texas at Austin where I recently graduated with a B.A in Journalism/Photojournalism.

Throughout my college experience I have been able to learn from renowned professional photographers such as Dennis Darling (photographic communication), Susan Gaetz Duarte (photography 1), Eli Reed (photography 2), and Donna DeCesare (advanced photojournalism).

Attending the University of Texas I developed a work ethic with strict guidelines working with various programs and equipment. In the photojournalism program I developed my skills in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign, Audacity, WordPress, HTML, film and digital image development, reporting, and use of traditional (35mm) and digital SLR camera equipment.

My experience with photojournalism began in my high school years. Taught by local AP photographer J.R. Hernandez, I participated in the school yearbook as a staff photographer, and in 2005-06 became my yearbooks photo editor. Placing 3rd in our city’s high school yearbook competition in 2005 I found myself loving the world behind a camera and the people involved.

The University of Texas helped me develop a greater sense of communication and team skills. Seeing things in a new and creative way is the core of the photojournalism program, and after graduating in 2010 my goal was to continue to expand on my experiences.

I hope to become a staff photographer for the El Paso Times in the near future, expand on to freelance work dealing with weddings, commercial events, sports, and hopefully document the growing Hispanic population along the border covering issues over health, civil rights, and culture.
